“We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world. In Breathing Under Water, Richard Rohr shows how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin.” –Breathing Under Water synopsis

This weekend we conclude the series “Breathing Under Water” with the 12th step, “Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” Scott explains how our journey so far has prepared us for a spiritual awakening and how carrying the message of the 12 steps to others leads to healing within ourselves. We also conclude this series with a liturgy of Thanksgiving.

This weekend we continue our “Breathing Under Water” series by exploring Step 11 of the 12 Steps: “We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.” Step 11 is about letting go of our attachments, self-image, expectations, and judgements. Scott guides us through a short centering prayer after explaining that contemplative prayer is all about quieting our hearts and moving beyond words in order to be able to rest in the presence of God.

This week, Tammy continues our series by discussing the 10th step: “We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.” This step reminds us to own our failure and look at ourselves and our shortcomings with truth and curiosity, instead of judgment.

This weekend we study Step 9 of the 12 Steps: “We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.” This step reminds us that when you begin to experience the love, acceptance, and grace of God, it changes you.
