Lent wk4 title card.001.jpeg

As we continue our Lenten journey, we read from John’s gospel story (John 9:1-41) about Jesus giving the blind man sight and Ben Hammond challenges us to be among “those who know they don’t see” by leading a life in which we constantly strive to recognize the humanity in others and offer everyone compassion, understanding, and grace.

Lent TITLE CARDS.008.jpeg

This week, Tammy Helfrich continues the Lenten season by looking at Jesus’ mountain top experience in Matthew’s gospel. Through this story we find that while mountain top experiences can be wonderful, disorienting, and fleeting, they ultimately prepare us, heal us, and equip us for what we were meant to do and lead us to become who we were created to be.

March 4 & 5, 2017 – Lent – Week 1 – Scott Hodge

Lent TITLE CARDS.001.jpeg

This past weekend marked the beginning of Lent – the forty day season that leads up to our Easter celebration. To begin our Lenten journey, Pastor Scott Hodge explored the importance of being rooted in our identity as God’s Beloved, and how that can empower us to overcome the three universal temptations Jesus faced in the wilderness: the temptation to say, “I am what I DO”, “I am what I HAVE” and “I am what OTHERS THINK.”

Epiphany 2 Keynote.001.jpeg

This week, our friend Mark Miller visits the Orchard and continues the message of Epiphany. Mark talks about the transformation that occurs when we awaken to the reality that there is something bigger going on and that we want to be a part of it; and it is then that God places a deposit in us that ensures us that now we don’t have to worry about death, and life can happen through us.

January 14 & 15, 2017 – Epiphany – Week 2 – Tammy Helfrich

Epiphany wk2 title card.001.jpeg

The word Epiphany can mean an unveiling, revealing, manifestation, or appearance. This week, Tammy speaks about the question posed to us by Jesus in chapter 1 of John: “What do you want?” We have been created with desires placed there by our Creator and our assumption shouldn’t always be that our desires are contrary to God’s. Tammy helps us realize that part of our journey is opening ourselves up to asking and discovering what those desires are.

January 7 & 8, 2017 – Epiphany – Week 1 – Scott Hodge

Epiphany Keynote.002.jpeg

The Epiphany is the story of the Magi visiting the Christ child. Through the journey of the Magi, we are reminded of a question all of us have faced and continue to face in our lives: “how do we find our way?” In times of uncertainty, one of the things that can never be taken away is our ability to chose how we are going to travel on our journey and Scott encourages us to be mindful of our posture on our faith journey.

The Epiphany is also a reminder to the church that Christ came for all. Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reminds us that both Gentiles and Jews, insiders and outsiders, “stand on the same ground before God. They get the same offer, same help, same promises in Christ Jesus. The Message is accessible and welcoming to everyone, across the board.”

December 17 & 18, 2016 – Advent – Week 4 – Tammy Helfrich

Advent 2 Keynote1.001.jpeg

Advent is a season of preparation, reflecting back, looking ahead and being thankful for what is right in front of us.

In the final week of Advent, we take a closer look at the story of Mary and Joseph and the courage it took for them to obey the will of God. Tammy reminds us that obedience doesn’t always look like what we image it might look like and that courageous acts of obedience are always preceded by much smaller acts of obedience.

December 10 & 11, 2016 – Advent – Week 3 – Scott Hodge

Advent 2 Keynote2.001.jpeg

Advent is a season of preparation, reflecting back, looking ahead and being thankful for what is right in front of us.

In the third week of Advent, Scott speaks about the tension in waiting and the tension between the idea of perfect Shalom and the world we actually live in. It is in between the hopes for the future and the shortcomings of reality that we are driven to embrace the Advent mantra, “Come, Lord Jesus.” We are encouraged to be patient especially in times of uncertainty and we are pushed to trust that there is something vital and important happening in the interim. Advent is an opportunity to turn our eyes toward the horizon with expectation but also to be present to the opportunity in front of us; to not just look and hope for Shalom but to be Shalom-makers in our lives.
