“We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world. In Breathing Under Water, Richard Rohr shows how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin.” –Breathing Under Water synopsis

This weekend we continue our “Breathing Under Water” series by exploring Step 8 of the 12 Steps: “We made a list of all persons we harmed and became willing to make amends.” We are challenged create an honest inventory of who we have hurt and how we have hurt them as well as to contemplate the reasons we hurt others as we move toward the ultimate goal of forgiveness.

This week, we study the seventh step, “We humbly ask God to remove our shortcomings.” We usually think we want God to remove our defects, but we’re often afraid of what it would mean if God actually did remove them. Scott encourages us to see that humility frees us to love and accept ourselves as we are.

“We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world. The series continues with Tammy speaking about the fifth step which says, “We admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.” Through this step, we come to understand that we encounter God’s love and see ourselves better through others; we are reminded that the restorative nature of confession allows us to come to maturity through the community to live a transparent life free of sin and addiction.

In the fourth week of the series “Breathing Under Water,” we transition from deciding to change, which was explored in the first 3 steps, into how we actually go about that change. The fourth step states “We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves” and Scott reminds us that we can not heal what we do not acknowledge.
